What Happens When the Truth Doesn’t Match Your Tradition?

Sometimes, the hardest part of seeking truth is discovering that something you’ve always believed or practiced doesn’t actually line up with Scripture.

That moment can feel disorienting, disappointing, or even scary. You might think:

How could I have missed this?
What will people think if I change my mind?
Does this mean everything else I believe is wrong too?

But take a deep breath—this is not the end of your faith. It may be the beginning of something much deeper.

First: Don’t Panic

When you realize something isn’t biblical, you don’t have to figure everything out at once.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” —Proverbs 3:5-6

God is faithful to lead. The truth may surprise you, but He already knew when and how you’d come to this realization.

Resist the Urge to Fix Everyone Else

Once your eyes are opened, it’s tempting to want to shake everyone around you and say, "Don’t you see this?" But that rarely goes well.

“The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.” —2 Timothy 2:24

Lead with patience and prayer. Let the change start with you, not as a crusade against others.

Let Yourself Grieve the Shift

Losing trust in a tradition or system can feel like losing a part of your identity. You might feel sadness, anger, or loneliness. That’s okay.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” —Matthew 5:4

Let yourself process the change honestly. God isn’t rushing you. He’s walking through it with you.

Focus on the Freedom Found in Truth

Yes, discovering the truth can be painful. But ultimately, it sets us free:

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” —John 8:32

When a tradition is stripped away, and what’s left is the pure truth of God’s Word, you are freer and more anchored than ever before.

Keep Moving Forward

Your walk with Jesus doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s. If He is leading you in a new direction, follow Him.

Be willing to:

  • Let go of things that aren’t biblical

  • Relearn things from God’s perspective

  • Stay humble and teachable along the way

You are not betraying your past. You’re being faithful to the truth you now see.

Follow the Truth Wherever It Leads

Jesus didn’t come to affirm our traditions. He came to reveal truth.

So if you find yourself standing at a crossroads between what you’ve always believed and what Scripture clearly says, choose truth—even if it’s uncomfortable.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” —Psalm 119:105

Have you ever had to unlearn something in your faith journey? What helped you keep your footing?
