Understanding Communion: A Simple Guide for Families & Small Gatherings
Communion, also known as the Lord's Supper, is a sacred practice that Jesus gave His followers as a way to remember His sacrifice, reflect on our walk with Him, and renew our commitment to live in Him.
This guide is meant to help individuals, families, or small groups observe communion with reverence and understanding outside of a traditional church setting.
What Is Communion?
Communion is a symbolic meal that remembers the body and blood of Jesus, sacrificed for us on the cross.
Jesus instituted communion during His final Passover meal with His disciples (often called the Last Supper).
"Do this in remembrance of Me." —Luke 22:19
It is not just a ritual. It is a deeply personal, spiritual act that calls us to:
-
Reflect on Christ's sacrifice
-
Examine our hearts
-
Reaffirm our faith and unity with Him
Key Scriptures
Here are some foundational passages to read aloud before or during communion:
1. The Institution of the Lord’s Supper
-
Luke 22:14–20
-
Matthew 26:26–30
2. Paul’s Teaching on Communion
-
1 Corinthians 11:23–29
"For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes." —1 Corinthians 11:26
3. Reflective Passages for the Heart
-
Isaiah 53 – The prophecy of the suffering servant
-
Psalm 51 – A prayer of repentance
-
John 6:35 – Jesus as the Bread of Life
A Warning and Invitation
Scripture teaches that communion should not be taken lightly. We are told to examine ourselves before participating.
"Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord." —1 Corinthians 11:27
This doesn’t mean we must be perfect to take communion—but we must approach it with a repentant, humble heart, acknowledging Jesus as Lord.
How to Take Communion at Home
What you need:
-
Bread (store-bought or homemade unleavened bread)
-
Juice (typically grape juice, but the symbolic meaning is what matters most)
Simple steps:
-
Prepare your hearts in prayer. Ask God to search you, forgive you, and renew your heart.
-
Read Scripture (see above for options).
-
Break the bread, remembering Jesus’ body given for you.
-
"This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
-
-
Drink the cup, remembering His blood shed for the forgiveness of sins.
-
"This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
-
-
Close with prayer and/or a song of thanksgiving.
Optional: Make Unleavened Bread
If you'd like to be more intentional, consider making simple unleavened bread together. This can be a teaching moment for kids or a meaningful act of preparation.
Basic Recipe:
-
1 cup All-Purpose flour
-
1/3 cup water
-
1 tbsp olive oil
-
Pinch of salt
(Optional) 1 tbsp honey
Mix, roll flat, and bake at 400°F for 8–10 minutes or cook on a skillet.
A Beautiful Reminder
Jesus gave everything for us. Communion is a time to recommit our lives to Him, reflect on His goodness, and rejoice in the grace that has made us new.
"Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him." —Psalm 34:8
Let each time you take communion be a moment of remembrance, reverence, and renewal.
